About the event

A 2 Hour tour of West Derby, a place much older than Liverpool itself originally a Viking village the name West Derby means “deer village” West Derby was once the centre of administration in the north west of England, it had its own castle & courthouse, which is still there today along with the local stocks .

The name of some of the local streets such as Castle view Road is where the castle once stood. Starting at Hotel Tia you can enjoy our terrace & patio area whilst browsing at some of our historic shirts worn & signed by club legends. First stop Anfield Stadium with a chance to see the historic Shankly Gates & statue of the famous man himself, we will then proceed to the historic West Derby were Bill & Nessie made their family home.

West Derby was also home to Everton’s training ground Bellfield where Bill would often visit & be made very welcome due to the respect he had, a true sign as a man of the people. Karen Gill our guide is the granddaughter of Bill & Nessie so who better to share her memories, stories & family photographs of the family home than Karen herself. You will pass The Bill Shankly playing fields, which has since harnessed many a player since. Passing by the world famous Melwood Training ground, which was used from the 1950’s right up to 2020, a place which has witnessed the Liverpool greats, Shankly, Paisley, Rush, Dalglish, Gerrard & Salah to name a few. A place was no doubt many of the famous trophy successes were plotted.

Melwood got its name after two local priests who taught at St Francis Xavier college who overseen the pupils. Theie names were Father Melling & Father Woodlock & that is how the name Melwood came about.
