About the event
This is a two hour tour of West Derby, originally a Viking village (the name West Derby means “wild deer park”). West Derby was once the centre of administration in the north west of England and it had its own castle and a courthouse, which is still there today along with the local stocks .
Starting at Hotel Tia you can enjoy our terrace and patio area whilst admiring some of our historic shirts worn and signed by club legends. After a photo opportunity by the Shankly mural, next stop is Anfield Stadium with a chance to see the historic Shankly Gates and the iconic statue of the famous man himself. We will then proceed to the historic West Derby were Bill and Nessie made their family home.
West Derby was also home to Everton’s training ground, Bellfield, where Bill would often visit and be made very welcome due to the respect he had earned, a true sign of a man of the people. Karen Gill, our guide, is the granddaughter of Bill so who better to share memories, stories and family photographs of the family home than Karen herself. You will pass The Bill Shankly playing fields, which has since harnessed many a player. Then we pass by the world famous Melwood Training ground, which was used from the 1950’s right up to 2020, a place which has witnessed the Liverpool greats, Shankly, Paisley, Rush, Dalglish, Gerrard and Salah to name a few. A place where no doubt many of the famous trophy successes were plotted.
Melwood got its name after two local priests who taught at St Francis Xavier college. Their names were Father Melling and Father Woodlock and that is how the name Melwood came about.
